An SR22 is a form that is required by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office and gives proof that a person has capability of financially compensating anyone they may injure, including properties they may damage, during a car accident, of which car insurance coverage is its most popular form. The main reason as to why anyone would be required to get an SR22 form is if they have been arrested/ convicted due to DUI (Driving Under the Influence) also known as DWI (Driving while Intoxicated).

In order to get your license back, or get a restricted license, getting an SR22 is the first thing you will have to take care of. You are actually not the one who will file this form, rather, you will need to find an authorized auto insurance company to give you coverage after your DUI. Once you get an SR22 insurance policy your carrier will be the one to notify the state DMV via the SR22 form.

A few things to remember about SR22: you would be required to carry or maintain your SR22 (and your SR22 insurance) for a period of tow or three years. This also means that you should not allow your insurance coverage to get canceled. A lapse in your SR22 coverage will make it more difficult for you to get another SR22 insurance policy reinstated and may make it prohibitively expensive to maintain insurance coverage the next time. We suggest you run a free SR22 insurance search on this website to get the most affordable SR22 policy fitting your needs.
