Reader’s Question:

I am 17 years old, and I just got a speeding ticket and received 3 insurance points on my license. Will my auto insurance find out and will it raise my insurance premium dramatically in San Francisco?

Chances are your insurance provider in San Francisco CA will learn of your speeding ticket when you renew your insurance policy and they obtain your motor vehicle report. If it was your 1st ticket, you might not see any change in your insurance rates. Some states have laws governing why and when car insurance companies can change policyholders’ insurance premiums; usually, insurance carrier are not permitted to increase your insurance rates after just 1 speeding ticket or other violation. Different insurance companies have different practices when it comes to raising insurance premiums. Some insurance providers will consider the severity of your infraction and increase your rates accordingly; others will raise insurance rates a specific amount per infraction.
